Il terzo biscotto non era sparito.

The third biscuit had not disappeared.

I had got up before Mum to check. I had left the other two on the little blue plate, in front of the cellar door, and in the morning I had found only a bit of sugar. This one had not been eaten. One of the points of the star had broken off: I recognised it at once, because the evening before I had tried to put it back in place.

I came down the last step without letting my heel touch. The door had brown paint that turned smooth near the handle, almost black. When I was small Dad had let me hold the brush; the hardened drip under the lock was mine.

"Don't you like it?" I asked.

« Tu n'aimes pas ? » demandai-je.

I waited with the plate in my hand. Above me, in the kitchen, the fridge started up. When it stopped, I put my ear against the wood.

"I can bring you another one."

« Je peux t'en apporter un autre. »

Mum appeared at the top of the stairs. She still had on the jumper from the day before, the blue one with a buttonhole that was too wide. She always did it up on the wrong button.

"What are you doing here, Anna?"

« Qu'est-ce que tu fais là, Anna ? »

Sollevai il piattino.

I held up the plate.

She came down, took it and laid two fingers on the biscuit, as if to feel whether it was warm.

"He was a bit sick in the night."

«Allora hai parlato con lui.»

"So you talked to him."

« Alors tu lui as parlé. »

Mamma guardò la porta.

Mum looked at the door.

Maman regarda la porte.

«Vieni a fare colazione.»

"Come and have breakfast."

« Viens prendre ton petit déjeuner. »

Avevo nove anni.

I was nine years old. I already knew that repeating a question could ruin her whole day.

J'avais neuf ans.

* * *

Papà era caduto venerdì sera.

Dad had fallen on Friday evening.

I was in my room with my headphones on, but I hadn't switched the player on. I did that when they argued: if Mum came to check, I could let her believe I couldn't hear.

Avevano parlato a lungo, quasi sottovoce.

They had talked for a long time, almost under their breath. Dad had said the tickets were already booked. Mum had asked him to look at her while he said it. Then something had hit the wall, so hard it made the glass on my bedside table shake.

Taking off the headphones I had heard a second noise, lower down, from the cellar end.

Mum had come into my room before I could get out of bed. She had a small cut on her lip and her right wrist gripped in her other hand.

Adesso devi lasciarmi lavorare.»

"Dad's had a fall. Now you have to let me get on."

« Papa est tombé. Maintenant tu dois me laisser travailler. »

Volevo chiamare qualcuno.

I wanted to call someone. She had shown me the phone: she was already calling, she said. She had made me put the headphones back on and had waited until I turned the music on.

Later she had explained that Dad had hurt his back and had to stay still on the old sofa in the cellar. She had spoken to a doctor. He mustn't be disturbed; she would go down and take him what he needed.

«Posso almeno dirgli buonanotte?»

"Can I at least say goodnight to him?"

«Stasera no.»

"Not tonight."

« Pas ce soir. »

Before going to bed I had found the biscuit tin behind the bread. The stars were Dad's favourites. Before eating one, he always snapped off a point and put it in my palm.

I had left one on the little plate. Mum had caught me on my way back up.

«Non devi scendere senza di me.»

"You mustn't go down without me."

« Tu ne dois pas descendre sans moi. »

I had explained about the present. She had stayed quiet for a moment, then stroked my hair.

The next morning the biscuit was gone.

«Vedi?» aveva detto. «Sta meglio.»

"You see?" she had said. "He's getting better."

« Tu vois ? avait-elle dit. Il va mieux. »

That Saturday I had asked to see him again. The doctor wanted quiet, Mum had answered. In the evening I had left another star, and on Sunday morning that one had disappeared too.

* * *

That Monday the milk had a skin on the surface. I lifted it off with the teaspoon and rested it on the rim of the cup. Mum put it back in.

«Oggi niente scuola?»

"No school today?"

« Pas d'école aujourd'hui ? »

«Ho già avvisato.»

"I've already let them know."

« J'ai déjà prévenu. »

«Della schiena di papà?»

"About Dad's back?"

« Pour le dos de papa ? »

«Che non stai bene.»

"That you're not well."

« Que tu ne te sens pas bien. »

Mi toccai la fronte.

I touched my forehead.

Je me touchai le front.

«Devi stare qui con me, Anna.»

"You have to stay here with me, Anna."

« Tu dois rester ici avec moi, Anna. »

The cellar keys were missing from the hook beside the fridge. Mum kept them in her jumper pocket; when she bent down I could hear the keyring jingle, a little carpenter's rule that Dad used to let me open.

Contai i piatti sullo scolapiatti, poi le posate.

Her cup was in the sink. Not Dad's. I counted the plates on the draining board, then the cutlery.

"What did he eat yesterday?"

« Il a mangé quoi, hier ? »

Mum was scrubbing the table in a spot where there was nothing.

The soup was still in the fridge, in the big jar. I had opened it looking for the butter and the green crust was unbroken. I thought she must have made another one. I also thought I could ask her, but she had started folding the cloth with a care I knew.

The phone buzzed near the bread.

Le téléphone vibra près du pain.

Sul display lessi Marta. Era la sorella di papà. Non veniva quasi mai a casa nostra; quando chiamava, lui andava a risponderle in giardino.

On the display I read Marta. She was Dad's sister. She almost never came to our house; when she called, he went out to the garden to answer.

Mamma girò il telefono a faccia in giù.

Mum turned the phone face down.

"If Auntie calls, what am I supposed to say?"

«Della zia mi occupo io.»

"I'll deal with Auntie."

« De ta tante, je m'occupe. »

I had decided to get the biscuit through to Dad directly.

Between the door and the floor there was a gap. A whole star wouldn't go through, but a point would. I took the broken one from the plate, while Mum was in the bathroom, and went back to the stairs.

L’acqua continuava a scorrere.

Before kneeling down I looked towards the kitchen. The water was still running.

Rimase impigliato a metà.

I pushed the little piece under the door with one finger. It got caught halfway. I eased it further, until I felt the cold of the floor on the other side.

"I broke this one for you," I whispered. "So it's not hard work."

« Celle-là, c'est moi qui te l'ai cassée, murmurai-je. Comme ça tu n'as pas d'effort à faire. »

I stayed there. I had chosen a present he could eat even if moving hurt him. It seemed impossible to me that he wouldn't understand.

I pressed my palm against the wood.

"Dad, if Mum doesn't want you to talk, you can knock."

Un colpo arrivò alle mie spalle.

A knock came from behind me.

I turned so fast that I hit the back of my head on the door. It was the doorbell. Then I heard another knock, longer, and Auntie's voice from the street.

«Elena. So che sei in casa.»

"Elena. I know you're in there."

« Elena. Je sais que tu es là. »

Mum came out of the bathroom drying her hands on her jumper. She saw where I was. She took a step towards the stairs, then the bell rang again.

«Vai in camera.»

"Go to your room."

« Va dans ta chambre. »

Restai seduta.

I stayed sitting.

Je restai assise.

«Anna.»

"Anna."

« Anna. »

La zia bussò alla porta d’ingresso.

Auntie knocked on the front door.

Mum turned towards the noise and I ran past her. I reached the bolt before she could catch me.

* * *

Marta had swollen eyes and was holding her phone. As soon as she saw me she bent down to hug me, but Mum pulled me back by the shoulder.

«Sta poco bene.»

"She's not well."

« Elle ne va pas bien. »

«Sono tre giorni che provo a parlarvi. Dov’è Paolo?»

"I've been trying to reach you for three days. Where's Paolo?"

«Ti ho scritto.»

"I wrote to you."

« Je t'ai écrit. »

«Mi hai scritto che è partito. Non è arrivato da me.»

"You wrote that he'd left. He never got to me."

« Tu m'as écrit qu'il était parti. Il n'est jamais arrivé chez moi. »

I looked at my slippers. I had thought of telling Auntie straight away that Dad wasn't eating; now I didn't know whether I would be told off in front of her.

Mum said maybe he had changed his mind. That her brother was like that. That Marta ought to know it better than anyone.

"He wouldn't have gone without her."

« Il ne serait pas parti sans elle. »

Mum's hand tightened on my shoulder.

Marta abbassò gli occhi su di me.

Marta lowered her eyes to me.

Marta baissa les yeux vers moi.

«Tu hai parlato con papà, tesoro?»

"Have you talked to your dad, sweetheart?"

« Tu as parlé à ton papa, ma chérie ? »

Mum answered yes. She said I needed to rest. She pushed the door until Marta had to move a hand to avoid being hurt, but I managed to slip into the little space that was left.

"His back still hurts."

« Il a encore mal au dos. »

Auntie stopped trying to catch Mum's eye.

"Where is he?"

« Où est-il ? »

Indicai dietro di me.

I pointed behind me.

"He can't move. But on Saturday and Sunday he ate my biscuits."

I carabinieri arrivarono mentre ero in cucina con Marta.

The carabinieri arrived while I was in the kitchen with Marta.

Mamma aveva provato a mandarla via.

Mum had tried to send her away. She had said I was making it up, that I had heard an argument and hadn't understood. Marta had stayed near the entrance, talking on the phone. All that time I had stared at the cellar, waiting for a noise that would sort everything out.

All Dad had to do was call. They would both have been ashamed, Mum for all those lies and Auntie for calling the carabinieri while he was trying to get better.

One of the two men crouched down beside my chair.

«Come ti chiami?»

"What's your name?"

« Comment tu t'appelles ? »

Marta gli disse il mio nome. Lui aspettò che lo dicessi anch’io.

Marta told him my name. He waited for me to say it too.

Poi volle sapere quando avevo visto papà l’ultima volta.

Then he wanted to know when I had last seen Dad.

"Friday. Before dinner."

« Vendredi. Avant le dîner. »

"And since then, have you heard his voice?"

« Et depuis, tu as entendu sa voix ? »

I thought of the first morning, of the empty plate, of Mum smiling. I realised I hadn't even heard him cough.

"He ate," I said.

The man looked at Marta. She took my hand under the table.

L'homme regarda Marta.

From the hallway came the jingle of the carpenter's rule.

Mamma stava dando le chiavi all’altro carabiniere. Cercò i miei occhi.

Mum was giving the keys to the other carabiniere. She looked for my eyes. Her mouth was half open, the way it was when she saw me put a finger near a hot pan and didn't know whether shouting would frighten me more.

«Anna, guarda me.»

"Anna, look at me."

« Anna, regarde-moi. »

Io guardai la porta.

I looked at the door.

The carabiniere turned the key and opened it only a little. He stopped. He reached an arm out behind him, without turning round, signalling to the other one to keep us back.

I saw my little piece of biscuit on the floor, just past the threshold.

It was where I had left it.

* * *

Marta took me out onto the landing. I didn't want to leave the house in my slippers; Dad always told me to put shoes on, even just to go to the car.

Auntie went back to fetch them. I stayed with the carabiniere, who was talking quietly into his radio. I asked him whether they would take Dad to hospital now.

He turned the radio down.

Il baissa la radio.

«Aspettiamo tua zia.»

"Let's wait for your auntie."

« On attend ta tante. »

Poi si abbassò davanti a me.

Marta reappeared with my school bag and the red boots I hadn't worn yet. The carabiniere spoke to her under his breath. Then he crouched down in front of me.

"I'm sorry, Anna. Dad is dead."

« Je suis désolé, Anna. Papa est mort. »

I looked at Auntie. I wanted her to explain to him about the biscuits, but she sat down on the step and pulled me to her. I stayed stiff on her knees until one of my legs started to hurt. Then I slid down, next to the boots. Inside one of them was a rolled-up pair of socks.

"The boots were in the bag," said Marta.

I pulled off my slippers and put the boots on. Auntie bent down to pick up the socks.

The zip was open. Under the pencil case I saw my pyjamas, the knickers with the cherries and the rabbit whose ear I had cut off. I had looked for that rabbit all Sunday. Mum had said I must have lost it.

Dad was the one who had bought it. When I was little he used to make up stories about why it only had one ear; every time I told him it wasn't true, it was me with the scissors, and he pretended to find out for the first time.

«Dove andiamo?» chiesi.

"Where are we going?" I asked.

« Où est-ce qu'on va ? » demandai-je.

«Da me.»

"To my house."

« Chez moi. »

"Is that why Dad packed my bag?"

Marta pinched the zip between two fingers. For a moment I thought she wanted to close it before I saw anything else.

"You were supposed to come on Saturday," she said.

« Vous deviez venir samedi », dit-elle.

Dentro casa mamma cominciò a piangere. Chiamò il mio nome. Mi alzai con uno stivale ancora slacciato.

Inside the house Mum started to cry. She called my name. I got up with one boot still unlaced.

The carabiniere went back in and spoke to his colleague. When he returned, he let Mum come as far as the threshold. Nobody left us alone.

She knelt down and laced my boot. Her wrist was shaking. I rested it between my hands to help her.

"The rabbit was in the bag," I told her.

She tied the knot too tight and had to undo it.

"He wanted to take me away."

« Il voulait m'emmener. »

It wasn't a question. In front of me were my pyjamas, the socks, the rabbit. Dad had thought of all the things I needed for sleeping.

Mamma mi avvicinò a sé.

Mum drew me close. I smelled the scent of her neck, the soap she washed my hair with, and for a moment all I wanted was to go back inside with her. We could stay in the kitchen until Dad made up his mind to knock.

Maman me serra contre elle.

"You wanted to stay with me, didn't you?" she whispered.

I didn't answer. Her hand went to the back of my neck.

Je ne répondis pas. Sa main chercha ma nuque.

«Anna. Dillo.»

"Anna. Say it."

« Anna. Dis-le. »

That was when I saw the sugar, caught in the wide buttonhole of her jumper. Next to it was a piece of biscuit, small as a fingernail.

I reached out to take it off. Mum caught my fingers and brought them to her lips.

I let her. Then I freed my hand, picked up the crumb and held it tight.

When Marta walked me towards the stairs, the carabiniere asked whether I wanted to leave him my bag.

Quand Marta m'accompagna vers l'escalier, le carabinier me demanda si je voulais lui laisser mon cartable.

Gli porsi invece il pugno.

I held out my fist instead.

"This one Dad didn't eat."

« Celui-là, papa ne l'a pas mangé. »

Gli altri due li mando per email

I send the other two by email

“Stay With Me” and “The Blue Plate” are not on this site. They go to whoever leaves their email here: the first one straight away, the second a week later. They are free, like this one. After that, one email a month, no more: where the next book stands and what is coming out of the workshop.
